Public lecture by Michael van Bergen

After graduating cum laude as an architect at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam with his project ‘A new life for the dead’ (nominated for Archiprix 2017, AHK-Eindwerkprijs 2016), Michael started his own studio Van Bergen Architectura in the fields of architecture where connections between emotion and architecture are explored.

In his graduation project, a building in which burials and funerals are combined, he found the key to reconnect death with life, closing the life cycle, an idea originating from the history of the funeral as a social event.

Before Michael studied architecture he graduated at the Art Academy St-Joost in Breda and worked for four years as an interior architect. This explains his detailed graduation models and his sensibility towards architectural materials.
